Podiumsdiskussion: Black History Month 2025

Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung

Critical Race Theory Across Borders

For some it is a fighting term, for others Critical Race Theory (CRT) is fundamental to understanding racism and its extent. Critical Race Theory is an interdisciplinary theoretical approach that assumes that racism is not an exceptional phenomenon, but a structurally anchored part of the social order. The theory has its origins in US jurisprudence in the 1970s and sees racism as a historically evolved, overall social phenomenon that expresses power structures and legitimizes the unequal treatment of people through discriminatory legal norms. The renowned philosophy professor Michael L. Thomas and his colleague Benedict Kenyah-Damptey will explore the history, key tenets, and contemporary relevance of Critical Race Theory, followed by a discussion of comparative research on the use of “race” in the U.S. and “Rasse” in Germany.

The event is taking place as part of Black History Month. During this annual month of action, issues of black identity and experiences of discrimination are addressed. Within the USA, but also beyond, it has become a cultural institution, in Germany since the 1990s.

The evening will be held in English.

In cooperation with the Volkshochschule Köln and the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V..
